Puesto que el aprendizaje de lenguas extranjeras se aborda ahora desde un enfoque comunicativo, las tecnologías de la información adquieren una gran importancia como parte del proceso de aprendizaje. Hoy en día, gran parte de la actividad lingüística se realiza a través de los medios tecnológicos. La interacción con estos medios no es solo escrita, sino que también puede ser oral. Además, las herramientas tecnológicas permiten una comunicación a niveles lingüísticos tanto formal como informal.

Por otro lado, estos medios facilitan el autoaprendizaje y la evaluación de nuestros alumnos, así como otras herramientas útiles y posibilidades casi infinitas.

En definitiva, la tecnología tiene en la actualidad una gran importancia de cara al futuro laboral y a la intercomunicación en general. En el caso de la enseñanza de la lengua extranjera, las tecnologías de la información son un soporte fundamental para las competencias lingüísticas requeridas.
Es por ello que no nos debe extrañar que aparezcan como parte del currículo como parte de todas las competencias en todos los cursos de la Educación Secundaria.
